Common Dental Emergencies We Treat
Knocked Out a Tooth? Here's What to Do Now
A knocked-out adult tooth has the best chance of being saved when you seek dental care quickly. Here’s what to do in the meantime.
- Pick the tooth up by the crown (the white part), not the root.
- Gently rinse the tooth with milk or saline. If that’s not possible you can use saliva.
- Reinsert the tooth back into the socket if you can or store it in milk or saline.
- Call either our Main Street or Henry Road practice to let us know you’re on your way.
Don’t attempt to reinsert a knocked-out baby tooth. See an oral health professional immediately.
What Happens When You Come in with a Dental Emergency?
First things first, we’ll work out what’s causing the problem and what needs attention now. We’ll examine the area and take X-rays where needed, then explain what we’ve found and your treatment options.
Sometimes we can complete treatment at your emergency appointment. Other times, the priority is getting you out of trouble first and putting a plan in place for the next steps.

Severe toothache, facial or gum swelling, a knocked-out tooth, dental trauma, a broken or badly chipped tooth, or uncontrolled bleeding can all require emergency dental care. A lost filling, loose dental crown or other sudden dental problem may also need prompt attention, particularly if you're in pain or the tooth is vulnerable to further damage.
If you're unsure whether you need emergency dental treatment, give us a call. We can help you work out what to do next.
If tooth pain is severe, persistent, keeping you awake or accompanied by swelling, fever or feeling unwell, seek dental care promptly. Toothache can have several causes, and toothache relief depends on identifying and treating the underlying problem rather than simply masking the pain.
For severe toothache in Pakenham, call either of our clinics and we'll advise you on the next step.
Rinse your mouth gently and, if you can find the broken piece, keep it and bring it with you. Avoid chewing on the affected tooth and contact us so we can assess the damage.
The right treatment will depend on how much of the tooth has been damaged and whether the nerve or surrounding structures are involved. Where possible, we’ll aim to save the tooth.
Keep the crown if it has come away completely and contact us for an appointment. Avoid chewing on that side and don't try to permanently glue the crown back yourself.
Depending on the condition of the tooth and crown, we may be able to reattach it, or another treatment may be required. A loose dental crown should be checked even if it isn't painful.
Most toothaches, broken teeth, lost fillings and crowns are best assessed by a dentist. However, some situations may need urgent medical attention.
Seek emergency medical care if you have significant facial or neck swelling that is affecting your breathing or swallowing, severe uncontrolled bleeding, serious facial or jaw trauma, or other symptoms that may be life-threatening. If you're unsure and symptoms are severe or rapidly worsening, seek urgent medical assistance.
The cost of emergency dental treatment depends on what's causing the problem and what treatment is required. We'll first assess the area and may take X-rays where needed. Once we know what's happening, we'll explain the treatment we recommend and what it will cost before anything goes ahead.
